Success Story Of 3D Printing In Pakistan

Since the last two decades there is presence of 3D printing but they were wrapped by patents. The steady boom of 3D printing began with the expiry of patents. By the passage of time this technology entered its way to Pakistan. The entry of 3D printing in Pakistan was initiated by Ali Ahsan.

It has been made super simple by Ali to those who are not aware of 3D printing. It’s a technology enabling the 3 dimensional design object on a computer and getting a solid tangible model in just few hours on your desktop. There is no need of any machining, tools or crafting skill. Yes! It sounds like magic but it has become a reality now on someone’s computer while you are reading this. This is supposed to be the biggest revolution that comes after the internet, as desktop printers have become more accessible the manufacturing and fabrication is the point of thought now with this transformation! It was explained by Ali with excitement that one was made successfully one year ago with insane fun and no point of turning back

Ali has a much more further going journey than a lot of others. Firstly his father inspired him in creating things. As he discusses his father that he loved to make new things which make life easier and much more problem solving. He never needed any electricians, plumbers, carpenter for the house and Ali was fortunate to have guidance with his father and learning those skills from him. Ali was helped through this training of mind to become a mechanical engineer which was not what he was supposed to become initially by a full time mentor.

He discusses more that he wants to pass these technical skills to his children as well. He and his wife have a separate maker room containing all the tools and electronics. Although he doesn’t remember the exact time when he started all this but the room was ought to be the initial stage in which they firstly made LEGOs  for their children which later ended them up to a LEGO Mind storm. In a healthy learning environment there is no need of proper teaching they learn by copying your steps.

Ali realized the great potential of 3D printing after dabbling with LEGO Mind storm a little he went for something even bigger. Creating toys for his children was not enough he was striving to create something much bigger and significant. Today as considered the next big revolution “The Maker Revolution” is a point where a lot of knowledge is shared. A group of open source 3D Printer was created by technical enthusiasts just as Linux was born, as there is a theory that if you can understand the working process of a 3D printer than you can possibly build one

In NIGC competition, Ali came across Pakistan in making collaboration between the most brightest and innovative Pakistanis through this platform for bidding. This opportunity was used by Ali Ahsan in creating the commercially viable 3D printer. Right now the testing phase is going on for his prototype. The initiative of PIF is very different you just don’t compete you get mentors here. If competing was the main purpose then that much learning was never possible in these workshops.

Ali is hoping some big achievement with this project. Sharing his experience with a younger enthusiasts and students alike audience is his aim.  Building an Eco system of innovation with 3D printing has been helped by his mentor Mr. Akhtar Hussain. There is requirement of exposure and training by 3D Printing unlike any new technology with availability of hardware and software. This will be made a common skill all over Pakistan by us with a proper Eco System and will be printed like all the developed nations.

The question here is about the future of 3D printing in Pakistan. Ali is sure about it as he is heading towards self reliance! Tangible product design and fabrication are the special conditions just like the difference made by desktop computers in the IT sector desktop 3D printing is on the same path. Fabricating products would be designed by the people from their very own desktops in a decade. This is noteworthy: The design of their engineering students could never be shown in working form. Only in their computer it would have been remained as CAD model. This year students from engineering universities were helped by me in fabricating their final project with the use of 3D printing. A fully functional prosthetic robotic arm was developed by us. Architectural students were also given a chance to present their design ideas in a tangible form which become the game changer.

But what is the future of the makers? Right now Ali’s focus is on 3D printing. A lot can be done in this arena. Ali has been hooked in his research and development since his first 3D printer to make new better printers in Pakistan. At present Ali’s entire focus is on the 3D printing and will be remaining in that area for a while. However some other prospects also exist in his bucket which are soon going to convert into some brilliant innovations.

Ali further explains that life can always be made more and easier with such creations and need is the mother of innovation. Innovation happens with the emergence of all of these factors. Till then innovations will be done by him and those with interest in 3D printing through this machine for innovators.
