PV Power Generation In Korea Expected To Reach Up To Over 500MW This Year

Notable performance of the Renewable Portfolio Standard(RPS) that the government executed in a full-fledged manager starting from 2012 to increase distribution of Renewable Energy is photovoltaic power generation business commendable growth

Ministry of Industry levied separated mandatory volume for supply in order to protect the photovoltaic power generation market in the beginning which is economically vulnerable. However, when the performance of the 14 mandatory RPS suppliers is examined during the last two years, it is possible to see that although photovoltaic power area realized fixed performance while generator facilities increased in number fast, non-photovoltaic power are failed to execute the mandatory volume due to worsening of the business conditions and strengthened regulation.

In fact, photovoltaic power that is a comparatively easier means for execution benefitted significantly from the RPS system as the installation capacity increased notably as the mandatory suppliers made efforts from diverse angles to execute mandatory volume actively through own construction and SPC(Special Purpose Company) business.
As a result, Ministry of Industry announced expansion of mandatory volume for the supply for photovoltaic power generated reached 80% level of the photovoltaic power generation facility capacity, constructed with the FIT during the last 10 years, in merely one year ever since the adoption of the RPS. Accordingly, photovoltaic power generation and distribution target increased to 1.5GW from 1.2GW by adding on 300MW during two years starting from 2015.

Korea Midland Power Co.
Korea Midland Power Co., is a mandatory RPS supplier and it is carrying out active activities with the goal of securing 2,493MW New Renewable Energy facility until 2022 to increase distribution of New Renewable Energy. This year, Korea Midland Power Co., is expected to pursue after 20~30MW new business, and it plans to install 50MW photovoltaic power generation facility until 2015.

Korea Western Power Co.
Korea Western Power Co., that has 8.9 MW facility that corresponds to 10.3% of the total generation facility capacity in Korea is a mandatory RPS supplier, and it engaged in representative activities at the photovoltaic power areas ranging from 0.2MW photovoltaic power plant to rooftop photovoltaic power of the Taean Generation HQs, 1.8MW bicycle road in Sejong City, 13.3MW F1 photovoltaic power in Yeongam, 1MW distributing reservoir generation site and others. Last year, a consortium with the Korea Western Power Co., acting as the pillar signed the MOU for the formation of composite 47MW New Renewable Energy complex at the sewage treatment plant in Gwangju City based on two energy sources, photovoltaic power and fuel cell. Likewise, unprecedentedly large energy complex is likely to be born.

Korea Southern Power Co.
Korea Southern Power Co.’s New Renewable Energy distribution project is centered on the strategies such as development of large scale photovoltaic power generation complex and joint entry into the overseas market. As of the end of last year, it operates New Renewable Energy capacity of 96.85MW for wind force and others. In particular, activity in the photovoltaic power area includes 5MW sized photovoltaic power plant and photovoltaic power plant constructed at public and school facilities. As for the upper photovoltaic power facility at settling pond, 1,470kW class filtration plant’s photovoltaic power plant which is Korea’s largest is representative. As for the photovoltaic power, it comprised a total of four SPCs to pursue after 56MW facility.

K-water
K-water is a mandatory RPS supplier, and it constructed and operates approximately 4.59MW at 17 business sites including Hapcheon Dam on-the-water photovoltaic power starting with the development of 176.4kW sized photovoltaic power in filtration plant in 2009.
In particular, after it started the construction of empirical 100kW sized on-the-water photovoltaic power plant at Hapcheon Dam in 2011 for the first time in Korea, it further grew and complemented related technology by carrying out empirical study during one year. In 2012, it constructed 500kW sized commercialization model at Hapcheon Dam. Last year, it constructed 100kW sized tracking type of on-the-water photovoltaic power for researching at the Hapcheon Dam for the first time in the world.
