General Information
Machine Tools and Automation sector has acquired an important role in the fast-developing economy of the country. In order to increase competitiveness of the locally produced engineering goods in the international markets, the Government of Pakistan is putting great emphasis on equipping local manufacturers with the latest production techniques to improve efficiency. The manufacturing sector has shown an overall growth of 5.4%. Small scale manufacturing registered a growth of 7.5% and large scale manufacturing grew by 4.8%, thus contributing to a growth of 5.8% in the GDP. The total machinery imports amounted to US$ 5.75 billion and exports of engineering goods reached US$ 391 million in the past year. Further strengthening the manufacturing industry, there are about 500 foundries functioning in Pakistan both in the organised and unorganised sectors, which produce grey/ductile iron castings, non-ferrous castings, steel castings, die castings and centrifugal castings. Currently, demand of grey/ductile iron castings in Pakistan is 250,000–350,000 tons per annum and will increase exponentially to 1 million tons in the next 8-10 years. All the major industries like textile, plastic and packaging, food processing, agriculture, ceramics, dairy, sugar, auto, steelmaking and cement are in continuous need for induction of latest technology which will further enhance the productivity of the manufacturing sector. |
